Big Tree Program
The mission of the Batavia Big Tree Program is to find, measure and catalog the largest native trees in the City of Batavia. Using guidelines set forth by the Illinois Forestry Extension, who administers the Illinois Big Tree Registry program, volunteers with the Batavia Environmental and Batavia Tree Commissions accept nominations, measure nominated trees, manage data and promote the program and the champion trees that are discovered as part of it.

Batavia High School Restoration Project
The goal of this project is to restore a storm water retention pond at Batavia High School. Teachers, Dan Renz and Donna Detrick, along with their environmental science students will be working over the next few years to restore the landscape on the north side of campus.

BYOB Campaign
To help remind shoppers to bring their own bags to area retailers, Batavia is launching the BYOB* campaign. BYOB* – Bring Your Own Bag – aims to encourage shoppers to carry reusable bags to local stores to avoid the retail single-use bag fee which toke effect July 1, 2023. The Batavia City Council voted in November 2022 to implement the fee.

Green Night Out at the Movies
A Green Night Out at the Movies is a yearly environmental documentary film screening typically held in March. This is a free event that aims to entertain as well as educate. The focus of this event is to provide tools to help all of us to personally make a difference. The event features a speaker or panel discussion by experts, an eco-exhibitors and free lemonade and popcorn.

Green Business Recognition
The Environmental Commission would like to honor Batavia businesses that are trying to be more sustainable and is asking residents to help identify these businesses.

Anti-Idling Campaign
The Batavia Environmental Commission has collaborated with Kane County Division of Environmental and Water Resources and the Batavia School District to encourage parents and students to stop idling their vehicles around schools. Anti-Idling campaign flyers are also available for distribution.
