Water Street Construction

The City of Batavia will start construction at the Wastewater Treatment Facility at 400 Shumway Avenue, in middle to late October 2023. A map of the area is below. The anticipated completion date is June 2026. Although most of the construction will take place within the treatment facility, there will be utility work along Water Street between Main Street and the dead end south of Union Avenue that will affect residents. This work will include new sanitary sewer main, watermain installation, new homeowner service connections, and storm sewer installation, along with final pavement/parkway restoration once the utilities are complete.

Construction is expected to start at the intersection of Water Street and Main Street. Sections of the roadway will be blocked temporarily during construction. Emergency access will be available during the project, but overall access will be limited for residents as the work will be taking place in front of residential driveways. Once work on a section is complete, the roadway will be temporarily opened for residential access. Residents will receive notices regarding individual home service connections prior to the construction. Water and sewer access will be shut off while that work is in progress.

Construction staff will be on site daily to assist with any questions and help assist residents through this process. We are continuing to finalize details regarding refuse pickup, mail deliveries, school bus routes and temporary parking locations. These details will be provided in future communications, so please check Bataviail.gov for updates.

In addition, the project will necessitate closing the west side of the Fox River Trail from Union to First streets. Trail users on the west side heading south from Geneva have two options:

  • Cross the bridge north of Fabyan Parkway.
  • Turn east at Houston Street and cross at the pedestrian (Peace) bridge.

Trail users approaching from North Aurora are encouraged to cross to the east side at the North Aurora bridge.

To assist residents and trail users, a map of the construction plan is below for reference.
