Mosquito Abatement Program

Overview

The City of Batavia and its private contractor provide a comprehensive mosquito abatement program to prevent mosquito larvae from hatching into adult mosquitoes. This is accomplished by treating mosquitoes in the larval state within storm sewer catch basins, as well as any area of standing or stagnant water within the city limits. The larval treatment of storm sewer catch basins is performed on a schedule to ensure the treatment remains active for the entire season.

Treatments to ponds and stagnant water are done only if the presence of mosquito larvae is detected. While every effort is made to control the mosquito population, it is not possible to eliminate all larval-state mosquitoes entirely.

Adult Mosquito Monitoring

Our contractor is required to monitor the presence of adult mosquitoes in traps at various locations within the city. These traps are collected twice a week to verify the quantity, species, and sex of the mosquitoes. Information acquired from the traps allows the City of Batavia to determine the need to spray an application to a specific area or throughout the city.

In addition, after heavy rain, the contractor may suggest a citywide spray. This treatment would be done just after the major hatch, which typically occurs 7-14 days after the rain event. The presence of a mosquito carrying the West Nile Virus could also prompt a citywide aerial spray.
