The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Division is a part of the Information Technology Department. The GIS staff creates, collects, and maintains geographic data. Our goal is to maintain the comprehensive spatial database capable of serving the needs of all city employees and the citizens of Batavia.
A GIS is a computer system that links spatial maps with data. This unique system allows for analysis, modeling, and querying of data within a single database according to a location on a map. Examples of table-based geographic data include addresses, utilities, streets, wards, and census blocks.
Batavia has been creating, collecting, and updating geographic data for over 10 years. GIS data comes from many sources such as Kane and Dupage Counties or by field collection done by city staff and consultants.
